The first step for either retiring or separating from military service is Pre-Separation Counseling.
Pre-Separation Briefings
The briefing is held at the Airman & Family Readiness Center (Rushmore Center, Suite 1500). The briefing starts promptly on time, and lasts at least 1.5 hours. If you arrive late for the briefing you will need to reschedule for a future briefing.
Prior registration is required.
Please call (605) 385-4663 to register. |
Pre-separation counseling is mandatory by law for military members. It provides an overview of transition benefits, assists members and spouses with assessing individual needs and offers long-range career guidance, and includes referral to service providers. Members have the opportunity to create an Individual Transition Plan that will outline education, training, and employment objectives of each member. Spouses are strongly encouraged to attend pre-separation counseling sessions.
Pre-separation counseling must be provided no later than 90 days prior to separation/retirement (except for short notice separations, where counseling must occur as soon as possible).
Pre-separation counseling must be documented on DD Form 2648 for all separating and retiring military members. The Airman and Family Readiness Center will forward the signed DD Forms 2648 to HQ AFPC, where the forms will be scanned and become a part of the member’s electronic personnel record.
NOTE: Completing pre-separation does not lock you into retiring or separating if you change your mind. However, it must be completed before you are allowed to register for a TAP Workshop. |
